It is the most common type of elbow fracture and happens most often to children younger than 8 years old. A supracondylar fracture occurs through the thin part of the distal humerus above the level of the growth plate. Supracondylar fractures are initially divided into two types, depending on the direction of displacement of the distal fragment: Flexion-type (rare) - distal fragment is displaced anteriorly. Do not forget to conduct a thorough neurovascular exam as supracondylar fractures can be associated with neurapraxias, vascular injuries, and compartment syndrome.

Objective: The primary objective of this study was to determine if Gartland type I supracondylar humerus (SCH) fractures undergo significant displacement resulting in a change in management when treated with a long-arm splint. Secondary objectives included measured changes at follow-up in displacement and/or angulation. The humerus (HU mer us) bone is the long, thick bone in the upper arm that extends from the shoulder to the elbow.

supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children under 15 years of age, treated as inpatients at Aurora Children’s Hospital, Helsinki, Finland, in the period in 1957-1967. Of the total number of 176 patients, 36 were excluded from our study, because there was neither fracture dislocation nor reduction.

The initial management of supracondylar humerus fractures in emergency conditions in-cludes splint immobilization of the upper extrem-ity preserving the appropriate position. Neu-rovascular control should be performed before and after splint immobilization.
